GPSs with Preloaded Maps are ready-to-go right out of the box. They typically have detailed maps of at least the continental US plus millions of points of interest such as hotels, hospitals, recreation areas etc. Units without preloaded maps require you to upload sections of maps via a PC
Text-to-Speech GPSs will tell you what road to turn onto - 'Turn Left in 400 feet onto Maple Ave.'. Our other dedicated car GPSs will give voice prompts but not mention the road i.e. 'Turn Left in 400 feet'.
Touch Screen Displays are super convenient and make entering data such as your destination a breeze. Units without the touch screen feature require you to input data utilizing scroll wheels and buttons on the body of the unit.
Traffic Reporting adds another dimension to your GPS. Radio networks transmit traffic data(only available in certain areas) to your GPS. If you are headed towards traffic, your GPS alerts you and gives you an option to pick an alternate course that avoids the traffic problem.
If you are looking for a great quality GPS at an economical price, are comfortable with uploading map data to your GPS via a PC, and don't require the other features listed on the left; these units are for you.
Color Displays are easier to read and help with detail. They typically cost from $30 to over $100 more depending upon model and screen size.
Electric Compass shows your heading even while standing still. GPSs with a Barometric Altimeter measure changes in ambient air pressure to calculate altitude.
Audible Alarms warn of conditions such as steering off course, moving from an anchored position or approaching your destination. Each GPS is different, so check to see if it has the alarms you require.
Area Calculation feature provides the area and perimeter of a group of Points of Interest to help in planning your trip.
Some units float and many are waterproof to IPX7 standard which means they can withstand being under a meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
Internal Upload Memory allows more detailed maps of terrain, water or roads to be uploaded into Mapping GPS’s in addition to any base map that comes pre-loaded.
Non Mapping GPS’s can upload Points of Interest (POI) databases.
Turn-by-Turn Navigation capable GPS's automatically route and tell you when to turn to keep on course, some using audio alarms. Note: Additional mapping software is required for detailed street instructions.
Garmin Rino FRS Radio units combine an FRS/GMRS 2-way radio with handheld GPS. A great Rino feature is the ability of each unit to transmit its position data to others in your group.
Heart Rate Monitor is integrated into GPS to provide digital heart rate along with GPS data.
Internal Rechargeable Batteries and a/c charger eliminate the cost and inconvenience of disposables
